Start of Summer????

July is now upon us and hopefully so is the summer weather (ha ha) i know us Brits do like to talk about ‘the weather’ but WHAT ever is going on! Are we going to get a summer this year??  However, lets keep looking on the bright side, at least its warm at the moment!!

Blakeney Point however is bustling with activity! the weather hasn’t affected the Birds and Seals. The Terns are showing the best any of us have seen for years, the sky is FULL of them at the moment around the nesting area, it seems like all the young ones have taken to the air at once, (I’ve tried to get some pictures but this just doesn’t do them justice!) You really need to see them for yourself!

Even if you’re not keen on our feathered friends you can’t help but be impressed,!

The wardens on the point had a Tern count early June and told me there were ’3735 pairs of Sandwich Tern ; 60 pairs Common ; 122 pairs Little Tern ; & 7 pairs Arctic Terns. (total around 7850 terns breeding! This they tell me is around 40% of the entire British Isle population of terns. (How did they count them all you ask??) I will find out and let you know.

This number has now increased dramatically since all the young have hatched, estimating around 16000 to  20000 birds and BOY! don’t they half make a noise you can’t hardly hear yourself talk.

The seals although much quieter lay right alongside the birds, how they put up with the noise is beyond me! We had a brief glimpse of a common seal pup last week but haven’t seen it since! probably keeping out of the way until bit older, there should soon ,however be several more anytime now, through into August! (i will keep you Posted!!)

If you like your birds try to come and have a look at them very soon!
